Step 1: Save empty egg shells. We usually start a few months early. We carefully chip the end off the egg so that the shells can be filled.
Step 2: Decorate the egg shells. We like to write on the eggs with Sharpie (things like Smash on Parker), and then we dye them.
Step 3: Fill the eggs. We use bird seed. People will use rice or confetti, but we like to make sure it's safe for all outside critters.
Step 4: Seal the ends. We use tissue paper applied with watered down glue to cover the ends.

Step 5: Let the ends dry. I set mine out in the garage overnight. Here's the finished product!!
Final Step: Hide, find, & smash. | Me getting smashed! |
| Big kids always help the little ones out! |
| My hubby trying to get the smashed stuff out of his shirt! |

I love this idea. I'd like to feature it on my blog with your permission. I put one of your photos, a brief explanation and a link to your tutorial. Tutorials and Patterns
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this. What a wonderfully fun idea.
ReplyDeleteLove cascarones! You guys look like you had a lot of fun :) Great job!
ReplyDeleteSO. MUCH. FUN! I think I'm going to do it your way from now on. The one time we did this it was in the dining room. No one suspected what the pretty bowl of eggs actually was. After dessert I passed them out and announced, "Hit the person on your right over the head!" Total chaos and loads of fun - but glittery confetti everywhere and poor grandpa vacuuming for weeks afterwards! Your way is far better and I love the bird seed idea too. You're right, of course. Kids never outgrow doing this - mine are all 20-somethings!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun idea! :)
ReplyDeleteA friend taught me how to make these as a kid. So much fun! Thanks for sharing...fun post! ;)
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this before either but holy crow that looks like fun! And a lovely way to get rid of all the pent up winter frustration too!

What a neat idea. I don't think I've ever heard of this before!
ReplyDeleteThat's cool- enviro friendly too! I hate buying plastic eggs that end up in the trash. I save them all year cuz I'm a cheap wad, they take up space- plus kids don't need all that candy & junk. I think mine would like this better!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this tradition! I like it! It sounds like so much fun! My boys are still too young to read but my older nephews would love this game! Thanks for the fun idea

Writing on the eggs with Sharpies reminded me that when we were kids, there was always one plain white egg with GENERIC written across it in black sharpie. It didn't matter how awesome the other eggs were, that was ALWAYS the coveted egg and the one we were most excited to find!
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting...I am sure the older ones do you like to play! We may try this. Would you consider adding this to a link up I host each weekend? This week we are featuring Easter ideas only. This post would make a perfect addition. -Savannah www.hammocktracks.com
