My Carefree Week!

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

My 10 year old is at church camp this week and my teen is headed down to hang out with 37,000 other high schoolers at the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. DH is off of work this week too. That leaves us with our 3 year old who is relishing having mommy & daddy all to herself. Today she helped Daddy paint the garage door, although she got more on the driveway than the door. We went out this evening and I got a new pair of Birkenstocks and then we went to dinner. We considered grabbing something from the Red Box to watch, but I am feeling sleepy and I tend to fall asleep when we watch movies. So we are just taking it easy and watching the Cubs instead. We will take a long walk in an hour or so.

Tomorrow we have to take our daughter for a 3 month surgery follow up. We spent much of the weekend in the van, but this shouldn't be so bad because it's only 90 minutes away. We have a little down time between her test and doctor visit, so we will probably walk along the river and watch barge traffic. We don't have any plans for Thursday at all. DH had a final on Friday morning and has to take off around 2:30 to make the 3 hour trek to pick up our son from camp. They have bbq and closing program. We will just have the 2 kids all weekend before teen returns on Monday afternoon. Life seems so carefree with just one child!!

Weekend Recap

Sunday, July 19, 2009

We had a full weekend of events planned including a nursing student from Taiwan, but there was a mix up in the scheduling and we were left student-less. I was bummed about this but came up with an alternate idea. I recommended that we go hunting for geodes in Indiana. A few months back at my son's science night at school one of the teachers displayed his rocks & minerals that he'd been collecting for years. My son (Parker) was fascinated by it all. We found out that there was great gem collecting the next state over. It's been in the back of my mind to go for a while, but it was never the right time. We decided to go for it and I spent some time researching on Friday evening.

When I realized that it was 3 hours away I started to reconsider, but my son stepped up and helped get things prepared. He had to be at camp at Sunday so we scrambled to get him packed and get things packed for our day out on Saturday. I had a 2 hour commitment on Saturday morning so we didn't get on the road until after 10am. We had some tools, plenty of water, and some snacks (including some FRESH kettle corn) and we got on the freeway. Even the dog went with us. After stopping for some lunch, which we ate in a nice grassy area, we arrived to the Lake Monroe area (south of Bloomington, IN) and started to search near the spillway. It just didn't look like what we were looking for so I asked a guy that was walking back to his truck after fishing if he knew good places to get geodes. He was very friendly and pointed us in the right direction. We went about 1/4 mile down to the emergency spillway and walked down to the shoreline. After we got past the spillway we started spotting small brain shaped rocks. After a few minutes we had piles of them! Some were already broken open and we saw lots of fossils. Everyone was very excited! The teen (Jake) hiked back up to the van with a small load and brought back the tools. We had fun breaking apart some rocks, skipping rocks on the lake, and just hanging out.

DH (Eric) & Jake carried a bag of geodes back to the van. They guessed it weighed about 125#. After enjoying the fresh fruit I packed we went up the road to a creek that the fisherman pointed out. Dori had fallen asleep, so Eric stayed at the van with her while the boys, dog & I explored the creek for more geodes. We found many more geodes, but had to call it quits when we realized we couldn't carry them all. We loaded them all in the van and headed toward home. We got to listen to the entire Cubs game, which helped time move along.

It was a great family day. Everyone enjoyed themselves and we all got along really well. I think this is important as we took Parker to camp today (7 hr roundtrip) and Jake leaves on Tuesday for a youth trip to New Orleans. So Dori will be an only child for a few days. She will relish it! Eric is on vacation this week, so she's sure to get plenty of attention!

Help with Cleaning Dog Hair

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

OK...so we adopted the cutest dog we could find at the Humane Society a few months ago. But he sheds! D'oh! The hair was getting out of hand so we had him groomed. Now the hair in the house is just shorter. It's driving me NUTS! We've used a broom, a vacuum, and even a Swivel Sweeper. They all just seem to push the hair around, but it's so hard to pick up. The vacuum & Swivel Sweeper just shoot the hair out at faster speeds! Do you have a suggestion on how we can get this dog hair up? Is there something that attracts the dog hair and actually helps you get it off the floor??? What has truly worked for you?

Our Weekend & Back to Reality

Monday, July 6, 2009

We had a very nice weekend in Sioux City. It was great to see my friends, see some sights, and relax. The kiddos really enjoyed all the fun snacks, fancy cable in the hotel room, and of course swimming. We covered a total of 1255 miles!

Here we are on Friday night walking back to our hotel after dinner. There was a parade going on and everyone just walked right in the middle of it. So we joined in.Saturday we visited the self-proclaimed "Ice Cream Capital of the World". It was a little hokey, but the kids enjoyed the soda fountain. They got pressed pennies and Dori calls it her 'Ice Cream Social' penny.Saturday afternoon was the wedding. Here we are at the reception. And for those of you who posted a comment here or at FB about my attire, here is what I wore. It was very appropriate! As you can see I curled my hair...that's something I haven't done in YEARS! (I don't wear makeup much either...although I need to!)Swimming at the hotel and 4th of July sunset out our hotel window.
We were not looking forward to our LONG drive home yesterday, but it wasn't so bad! The 9+ hrs ticked by quickly. We play a game called Name It & Claim It in the car. Much like Name That Tune. We scroll around on the radio and try to be the first to name the song & artist. If you just get one of them, then we say 50%. Just something I've done with some of my siblings in the past. When we come across a song we really like we will just listen. We also caught the entire Cubs game (Yea...they WON!) which really helped time go quickly. Dori entertained herself with body art. I think she's got some pretty good skills for a 3 yr old! Dori just informed me that the circle under me is not my body. It's her! And Parker is up above her knee. Silly smarty pants!!It's nice to be home, but it's back to reality. Messy house, needy kids, work, dog, chores, errands, etc. I have a FULL plate of clients lined up...so I should wrap this up and get to work!

Hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July weekend!!

Congrats Amy & Jim!

Saturday, July 4, 2009

I went on a semester exchange to Bethel College in Minn/St. Paul back in the 80s. I served as the student athletic trainer for the volleyball team and that is how I formed a friendship with Amy. She and Jim met way back then and *FINALLY* got married. I told Amy years ago if they ever got married I would come. So that is why I we are in Sioux City this weekend.
We are in for a LONG drive home tomorrow!

Happy Birthday America!

We are in Sioux City, IA for a friend's wedding. I met them way back in the late 80s and they are finally getting married. We got to go to a parade and see fireworks last night as they were right by our hotel. It's kind of cool and dreary with misty rain. We just visited the Ice Cream Capital of the World and had some YUMMY fountain treats. Off to the wedding in about an hour. Not looking forward to the LONG drive home tomorrow!

Hope all of you are having a nice & safe 4th of July!
