What first made you want to become an artist? I have been painting, drawing, creating things for as long as I can remember. I started to make beads when my oldest child, who is now 3 years old, was a baby and sleeping all of the time. I wanted to try a new craft and to keep myself busy. And before I knew it, I had hundreds of beads with nowhere to go...so, I decided to open up an Etsy Store and see how they do..
What do you sell in your Etsy shop? Paper Mache Beads. I make them from my secret recipe of newspaper and good old fashion Elmer's Glue. I then drill, paint, and varnish each bead. You will find paper mache beads in the polka dotted, striped, flowers, marbled, and solids variety in my store.
Apart from creating things, what do you do? I stay home with my 2 toddler girls, so most of my time and attention goes towards them. I also love to bake, cook, read, swim, and hang out with my husband.
Please describe your creative process. (how, when, materials, etc) So boring, I know, but I really don't have one. It is truly whatever the mood strikes me.. and I just go with it.
What has been your favorite item that you made and why? I actually did an acrylic painting on a wooden board that is hung over our dining table...that is my favorite because I painted it while I was thinking about my family. So, that is what that painting means to me.
Where do you find your inspiration? In just about everything. My family, In the books I read to my children, the trees in my backyard, the ocean, emotions..Inspiration can come from anywhere.
How do you promote your work? I twitter some.. but mostly I just talk to others on twitter. I blog. I entrecard. Really, that is just about it. I have heard of people sticking there business cards in library books at the library..haven't gotten up the nerve to do that yet. When it comes to advertising.. I sort of feel that if someone wants to buy my beads.. then..they will find them. I know.. I know, not much of a business plan...maybe in the future, I will have to tweak it a little bit.
If money and time were no object, what would you be doing? I would probably be doing what I do now, expect I would be doing it from my beach houses in the Hamptons, Florida, on the coast of California, Hawaii, and a ski chalet in Colorado.
I also asked Kristin what she recommends her paper mache beads be used for? These beads are really just like any other and can be used for anything, you are only limited to their use by your imagination. My past customers have used them in jewelry to folk art to dolls and handbag embellishments. The beads are painted with acrylic paint and then I apply a varnish to the beads, so they are water resistant.
